If you are considering rhinoplasty, you are likely considering it for one, or both, of two reasons. One, you may have difficulty breathing due to a deviated septum or another abnormality of the structure of the nose. Two, you might not be happy with the appearance of your nose and simply want to get what is colloquially referred to as a “nose job”.
Both are valid reasons for rhinoplasty and both involve needs that a cosmetic surgeon can address. Here are some of the things you should know about rhinoplasty that can help you make your decision as to whether or not you want to go through with one of these procedures.
The Cosmetic Elements
Surgeons that perform rhinoplasty have to have very developed aesthetic abilities to get the cosmetic results that their patients want. The surgeons will work with their patients, helping them to decide upon an end result they want for their nose and, once they have both agreed, the patient can go through the surgery. The results are generally very good. Most people walk away from a cosmetic rhinoplasty very pleased with the results.
Some people may just be unhappy with the size, the angle or other aesthetic elements of their nose. Other people may have sustained some sort of damage to their face that altered the appearance of their nose in a way that they would like to have corrected. Either way, there are excellent options available and, in some cases, these procedures are no more complicated than an outpatient surgery done under local anaesthesia.
Rhinoplasty is a very well established and very highly developed and sophisticated area of medicine and is one of the types of surgeries where patients are usually very pleased that they had it done.
Breathing Issues
Some people have abnormalities inside their nose that might not be apparent on the outside. Others have abnormalities that are likely apparent on the outside, such as a deviated septum. In either case, a surgeon that performs rhinoplasty can work with their patient to determine exactly what type of an issue they have and how they can go about correcting it surgically.
Like rhinoplasty done for entirely cosmetic procedures, rhinoplasty that is done entirely to correct breathing issues is sometimes an outpatient procedure. The surgeon may only need to realign the septum to get the desired result and the patient may be able to go home after they have recovered for a bit in the doctor’s office. Some procedures may require an overnight hospital stay, however.
Again, the results with rhinoplasty done for breathing issues are generally excellent. People breathe better, feel better and, in some cases, they are much happier with their appearance.
How Traumatic Is It?
Anybody going through a surgical procedure or considering one has to take into account the level of discomfort involved. The rhinoplasty will be done under both local and general anaesthetic. So you will be asleep and won’t feel the procedure being done.
After the procedure is completed, you’ll have splints and a plaster placed. You’ll also likely have some bruising and quite a bit of swelling. This may take a few weeks to go down, but you’ll generally start to see the results pretty quickly. Once all of swelling is gone, you should be breathing very well and your nose should start to look how you wanted it to look.
Rhinoplasty is a great option for people who either dislike the appearance of their nose or have trouble breathing. The techniques for rhinoplasty are always advancing and offer excellent results.
If you have questions or concerns about rhinoplasty see your local doctor who will arrange for you to see a nose surgeon.
